Concept note
Taking place in a post-pandemic context and facing several geopolitical shifts, the 2022 convening aimed to address challenges like the climate crisis and inequality by empowering people-centred social movements. Hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa, the convening welcomed a diverse representation of social movement actors to engage participate.
The world’s failure to deal equitably with COVID-19 stands as the ultimate indictment of a global system that prioritises profit over people and ignores the needs of the most vulnerable in society. Additionally, geopolitical reconfigurations threaten to unravel all existing platforms for multilateral engagement with huge implications on issues of fundamental concern for progressives including energy, climate and just transition; economic justice as well as democracy and political rights.
