Convening report
TrustAfrica, Wallace Global Fund and Omidyar Network hosted the inaugural African Social Movements Baraza with the aim to bridge the digital and physical divides between social movements, and facilitate intermovement experience sharing and co-learning. Hosted in Harare, Zimbabwe on the 15th and 16th of February 2018, this report details the proceedings and outcomes.
The convening fostered connection, experience sharing, and collective problem-solving among African social movements under the theme “Agency, Power, Impact”. Discussions explored the challenges and opportunities faced by these movements, highlighting the harsh political environments, the use of nonviolent resistance methods, and the importance of inter-movement solidarity.
Participants also discussed the role of women and youth, the need for sustainable funding models, and the importance of knowledge sharing and networking for future growth and impact across the continent.
